Gunkanjima

Category

Gunkanjima, on the southwestern coast of Nagasaki prefecture is a tiny 6.5 hectare island. During the early to mid 1900s, Gunkanjima served as Japan's coal mining hot spot, and the island even once had the world’s highest population density. Today, the concrete and steel industrial ruins remain, and the World Heritage Site island is open for tourists to visit.
