The Akita Kanto Festival is held annually from August 3rd to the 6th. This festival is one of the Three Tohoku Festivals, along with Aomori’s Nebuta Festival and Miyagi’s Sendai Tanabata Festival. Huge bamboo poles with lanterns on them, called kanto, are balanced on different body parts. The kanto poles measure up to 12 meters in length and weigh up to 50 kilograms!
