Tobacco & Salt Museum, located in the Sumida Ward, the urban area of Tokyo, is a museum close to Tokyo Sky Tree and is easy to access. It was established in 1978 by Japan Tobacco & Salt Public Corporation, also known as Japan Tobacco Inc., and was reopened in 2015 after its renovation. This museum is unique for its displays that shows history and culture of “tobacco” and “salt” that were once monopolies. It is also distinctive that this place exhibits a variety of resources from not only Japan but also from many other countries around the world. The “Altar of Saint Kinga”, the sculpture made of salt from a rock salt lake of Poland, and the relief of the “Smoking scene of god of Mayan civilization”, which was found in Palenque site in Mexico are the museum’s permanent exhibitions. There are many other interesting displays such as the advertising posters that were actually used in modern Japan, the reproduction of tobacco culture of Edo era and so on, which make this place amusing for a wide range of people, including non-smokers and children. On your way home, you can buy souvenirs such as salt from Poland and flints at a shop located in the first floor of the facility.
