Gujo Hachiman Castle
Gujo Hachiman Castle
Gujo Hachiman Castle locates in the city of Gujo in Gifu prefecture. The castle sits 354 meters up in the sky, and is surrounded by lush, green mountains. It was built in 1559 by warrior Endo Morikazu, as the main castle for the Mino Province (present day Gifu). However, it was abandoned in 1871 and all that was left were the stonewalls surrounding the castle. The castle was rebuilt in 1933, and today, it stands as the oldest re-built castle in the country. In recent years, the Gujo Hachiman Castle has gained attention for its amazing view of the sea of clous. The castle is often referred to as “the castle in the sky”, as it looks as if it is peeking out of the clouds. You can go to Horikoshi Pass from National Route 256 for a great view of the castle and the clouds. However, it is not easy to see the sea of clouds, as it requires certain weather conditions to be precisely met.
