Mount Tokachidake Observatory

Mount Tokachidake Observatory is located at the entrance of Mount Tokachidake that locates in an altitude of about 930 meters. This mountain is elected as one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.
This observatory offers a 360-degree panoramic view to its visitors. From the observatory, you’ll see the rough surfaces of Mount Tokachidake’s rocks. Look around, and you’ll see a whole view of Mount Asahi, the highest mountain in Hokkaido, and other mountains such as Mount Biei, Mount Kamifurano. The pastoral landscape of Biei and Furano spread just below you.
The magnificent view is not the only attraction at the Mount Tokachidake Observatory. Mount Tokachidake is actually an active volcano, and has erupted many times in the past. You can look closely at the impressive stream of hardened lava that remains from those eruptions.
You can enjoy observing alpine plants in the summer. The autumn foliage is also definitely one of the must-see things at this mountain, and you can catch it during early October. Colored trees such as the Siberian dwarf pine and white birches color the mountain brightly.
As Mount Tokachidake is an active volcano, we strongly recommend you to check the Japan Meteorological Agency’s volcanic alert level before visiting.
