Ginkakuji Temple (Higashiyama Jisho-ji Temple)
Ginkakuji Temple (Higashiyama Jisho-ji Temple)
Ginkakuji Temple, located in northern Kyoto City, is formally known as Higashiyama Jisho-ji Temple because Ginkakuji Temple was renovated into a temple after being used as a villa for the Muromachi period general, Yoshimasa Ashikaga, in 1482. The name, Ginkakuji Temple, came about in the Edo period. The Kannon Temple, one of Japan's national treasures, is a sight to see for its representative colors, "wabi" and "sabi". The two-storied building with a Zen Buddhist styled upper layer and a house styled lower layer is a unique feature to the temple. Also, the "Togudo Shrine" has been left in its original shape made from Japan's oldest Shoin styled architecture. The tea garden, with the stripe patterned white sand, "Ginshadan" and the triangular, "Kougetsudai", is a must see area as well.
