Abashiri Prison Museum
The Abashiri Prison Museum locates in the city of Abashiri in northeastern Hokkaido. The museum used to be a real prison that was established in 1890. The museum grounds are spacious, and measures 164,000㎡, which is about 3.5 times the area of Tokyo Dome. Inside the prison, you can find solitary confinement rooms, baths and more. Many of the facilities are designated as important cultural properties, since they have a great historical value to them. You can experience the prisoner lifestyle by participating in the prisoner experience tours, where you can try out the jobs that the prisoners had done. There are also special guided tours, in which the museum staff explain to you the prison in detail.
