Lake Akan
Lake Akan locates is in the city of Kushiro in eastern Hokkaido. It is the fifth largest lake in Hokkaido, and the whole area is a part of the Akan Mashu National Park. The entire lake is designated as an important international wetland under the Ramsar Convention.
The lake is famous for its "marimo", or moss balls made up of green algae. They are only found here in all of Japan, and are designated as a national natural monument.
The area is also a famous hot springs spot. By the lake, you can find several onsen resorts. The waters of the springs in this area are clear and scentless, and are great for those with sensitive skin.
