Lake Kussharo
Lake Kussharo
Lake Kussharo, in the town of Teshikaga in eastern Hokkaido, is the largest caldera lake and the largest freshwater lake in Japan. “Kussharo” derives from the language of the Ainu, or indigenous people of Hokkaido, meaning “the opening of the lake”. The lake has a circumference of 57 kilometers and an area of 79.3㎡. There is even an island on the lake. The waters of the lake are a beautiful cobalt blue shade, and are used for water sports in the summer months. Around the lake are other impressive sightseeing spots as well, such as Sunayu. It rests right by Lake Kussharo, and is a sand area with hot spring waters underneath it. You can dig up your own bath here.
