View of Todowara

Todowara, located on the Notsuke Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, is the remains of a fir forest. The fir withered due to the erosion of the nearby sea’s waters, and the withered trees remain today. The decayed forest is nicknamed the “end of the world”, due to the eerie atmosphere it creates. The harsh ocean winds and erosion are still eating up the trees, and Todowara’s appearance is changing by the second. In the summer, flowers blossoms around the withered trees, giving some life to the scenery. In a different part of the Notsuke Peninsula, you can find “Flower Road”, where flowers deck a 15-kilometer road.
