Naso-no-Shirataki Falls

Naso-no-Shirataki Falls locates in the city of Nikaho, Akita. It is inside of Kinpo Shrine’s grounds, and is a national scenic site.

The falls measure 26 meters tall and 11 meters wide. Around the falls, there are many giant cedars and rocks that give it its unique atmosphere. Although visitors are not allowed near the fall basin, the powerful sight of the waterfall slamming into the basin's surface is enough to feel the waterfall's might from a distance.

Every June, Kinpo Shrine’s main festival is held. The highlight of the festival is the Chokurairo Dance, a traditional dance that has a history of around 1,200 years. In 2004, this dance was designated as a national intangible cultural property. Tradition says that the dance was started by the monk Jikaku-Daishi, who used this dance to repel the evil spirits dwelling in Mount Chokai at the time.
