Toki no Kane (The Bell of Time)
Toki no Kane (The Bell of Time)
Toki no Kane means simply "bell of time", or "clock bell". The symbolic Toki no Kane is found in Kawagoe city, in the southwest part of Saitama Prefecture. Easily located, the clock tower rises high above Kanetsuki street (Bell street) and is line with historical Kura-style buildings. In the Edo era, Sakai Tadakatsu, Lord of Kawagoe, was the first to build such a clock tower. As this bell marks the times of the day, it has been familiar with the public ringing at six am, twelve noon, three pm and six pm. Toki no Kane has been rebuilt every time regardless of various fires in the past. In 1996, the beautiful tone of the bell was recognized as one of the‘100 Sound Sceneries of Japan’ and is preserved by the Ministry of the Environment. Kawagoe is also known as Koedo (Little Edo). You will find many irresistible street foods here. Why don't you try the traditional sweets, Wagashi, or the delicious meatballs, Tsukune, while strolling and checking out the stretch wooden houses and shops in Koedo-Kawagoe.
