Shibamata Taishakuten

Shibamata Taishakuten
"Shibamata Taishakuten" is located in the Katsushika-ku ward of eastern Tokyo. It is a common name referring to temples of the Nichiren sect, officially called "Kyoeizan Daikyo-ji". The main feature here is the sculpture carved to cover the Taishakudo standing in the precinct, and of these, the ten sculptures of the Douhame has a motif based on a story of the Lotus Sutra. It took about 10 years to complete this piece, starting from the end of Taisho ear to early Showa era, involving ten leading sculptors of that time displaying the magnificence of traditional Japanese art techniques. Nearby areas are also famous as the set of a Japanese movie "Otokowa Tsuraiyo", with a statue of the main characters Tora-san (Kiyoshi Atsumi) and his sister Sakura (Chieko Baisho) standing in front of the Shibamata station. The Katushika Shibamata Tora-san Memorial Hall is also a must-see spot, where you can enjoy the reproduced stages of the movie and fully appreciate the world of the movie.
