Tokachi Ranch

Tokachi ranch stands in Otofuke town, in central Hokkaido. It was founded in 1910 to breed horses. Today, the site is involved in the improvement and breeding of horses, sheep, and beef and dairy cattle. The ranch also supplies crop seeds. Two protected rivers run through the ranch, which spans an area of 40 square kilometers. The vast site is a popular tourist destination, with an observation deck, a 1.3-kilometer road lined with white birch trees and a gigantic oak tree that is more than 500 years old. Apart from the livestock, visitors may spot wild Ezo (the old name for Hokkaido) squirrels, native snow rabbits, red foxes, and Hokkaido's famed red crowned cranes. During the winter, dozens of horses are taken outside to exercise in the snow. The roundups are usually closed to the public, but visitors can watch them during mid-January to end February.
