Kamakura Museum of Literature
Kamakura Museum of Literature
The Kamakura Museum of Literature is in Hase, Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. This museum collects, archives, and displays materials about literary people who are associated with Kamakura. This building was also used as the model for the villa that was featured in the novel "Spring Snow" by the writer Yukio Mishima.
This building, standing on a prime location on a hill with a view of the sea, was originally owned by the Maeda family of the Kaga domain and used as their Kamakura villa for generations. Besides literature, you can enjoy natural sceneries such as the approach surrounded by green groves, several species of roses in the rose garden, and the view from the mansion overlooking the quiet Kamakura sea. Inside the museum, there is a wealth of valuable materials telling of about 300 literary writers associated with Kamakura, including famous authors such as Ryunosuke Akutagawa and Yasunari Kawabata. You can view their handwritten manuscripts, letters, everyday favorite items, and more.
If you enjoy a walk through the quiet streets from the Enoden station, you can visit sightseeing spots such as Hasedera and Kamakura Daibutsu (Kotoku-in Temple). The museum is a must-visit spot when visiting Kamakura.
