The Nuno-zouri of MERIKOTI

MERIKOTI

MERIKOTI is a shop in the Ryogoku area of Tokyo's Sumida Ward, that specializes in hand-made "nuno zori" slippers. MERIKOTI is run by the textile manufacturer, Orange Tokyo co., ltd.

MERIKOTI deals in their original “MERI” line of nuno zori slippers, colorful toe socks to go with them, and all kinds of other items to add a splash of color to your indoor footwear. Their wide variety of items includes gloves in matching patterns with their socks, and button accessories too.

The MERI nuno zori slippers inherit their entirely hand-done manufacturing process, from grandmothers in the Japanese Tohoku (northeast) region where the handicraft is popular. The base of the slipper is created with Orange Tokyo co., ltd.’s knitted yarn, and the toe straps are attached onto there. Each nuno zori slipper is made with meticulous care, and only about 2 to 3 can be produced by a single craftsperson in a day.

The flex and softness of the material is entirely different from regular slippers, and has captured the soles of many people who continue to love them. They make great home shoes for one’s self, as well as gifts.

8 times a month, workshops are conducted where visitors can try making their own nuno zori. Reservations can be made both online, and over the phone.
