Dazaifu Government Remains
Dazaifu Government Remains
The "Dazaifu Government Remains" are located in Dazaifu City, in the western part of Fukuoka Prefecture. This historical site represents the "Dazaifu", the center of Kyushu politics during the Nara and Heian periods - it is now maintained as a park. The Dazaifu government used to rule over this area, and acted as the window for Japan's western defense and diplomacy. This city is said to be the largest in size in Japan, after Heijokyo and Heiankyo. Many cornerstones and monuments of the building remain on the premises, allowing visitors to see what the size of the building was in its heyday. The seasonal scenery of cherry blossoms in spring as well as the color of the leaves in autumn make for a spectacular scene. The adjacent "Dazaifu Exhibition Hall" preserves and displays archeological remains excavated from this area. The commentary on the exhibits are a great addition to your tour of the ancient city.
