Bodaiji Temple was founded in 862 by Buddhist priest Ennin. Ennin found Mount Osore after going on a search to find the holy mountain that appeared in his dream, and built his temple there. The deity worshipped at Bodaiji is said to bring salvation to those in suffering, and the people of the Shimokita peninsula show a strong connection to the deity to this day.
