Night view from Chikumagawa Tenbo Park

Chikumagawa Tenbo Koen Park

Chikumagawa Tenbou Koen Park is in Chikuma City, in northern Nagano Prefecture. The park has sweeping views of the Chikuma River and the Nagano basin, which is also known as Zenkoji-daira.

The 650 m-tall hill overlooks the Obasute rice terrace, which is designated by the national govenment as a prime scenic location. The landscape covered by approximately 2,000 rice fields of various sizes embodies the natural beauty of Japan. The view attracts many photographers, even from outside of the prefecture. Especially beautiful is the night view. There are no street lights around the observation deck, so visitors get to enjoy a spectacular view of the night lights that stretch across the Chikumagawa River, in all of its sparkling glory.

The park is near various photo spots, such as Obasute Station — which is one of Japan’s three best sites with great train window views— and Obasute Service Area and Obasute Park, which are included in a list of Japan’s 100 best night view spots. Visit Chikumagawa Tenbo Koen Park to get a full experience of Nagano's many beautiful landscapes.
