Yokohama Customs
Near the Tokyo Bay stands the Yokohama Customs, which is located in Yokohama City of Kanagawa Prefecture. This dome-shaped building was built with an exotic feel inspired by the temples in Islam and got the nickname "Queen" because it is loved by many. At the Yokohama Customs, you are able to fully immerse yourself in the history of this facility, as it was used to protect the town since the initial opening of the port. Due to the Kanto Great Earthquake, the building once collapsed, however, it was rebuilt in 1934 and has kept its figure ever since. On the first floor of Yokohama's historic cultural government building, the "Queen's Square" is displayed in the document exhibition. At the entrance of the exhibition, a customs guard character, Custom kun, is there to greet all visitors. Inside, visitors can not only learn about the history, contribution of the customs, and smuggling techniques but also try out metal detectors at the hands on corner!
