Sumiyoshi Shrine
Sumiyoshi Shrine
Sumiyoshi Shrine is in Fukuoka city, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is said that this shrine was built about 1800 years ago and is one of the "Three Great Sumiyoshi Shrines" (the other two are in Osaka and Yamaguchi prefectures) which represent the 2129 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide.
Here, the 3 Sumiyoshi Gods (Sumiyoshi-sanjin) "Sokotsutsu-no-Okami", "Nakatsutsu-no-Okami", and "Uwatsutsu-no-Okami" are enshrined alongside "Amaterasu Okami" (Japanese sun god) and "Empress Jingu". Together, these 5 comprise the 5 grand Sumiyoshi Deities. These gods have been worshipped by many people since ancient times as deities who could purify people's minds and bodies, and protect believers from all disasters.
The building is made in the "Sumiyoshi-zukuri" style, which is said to be the oldest style of shrine architecture in Japan, characterized by impressive gable roofs, and crimson rafters and gable boards rarely seen anywhere else. On the grounds, there is also a Noh (ancient Japanese stage play) theater designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of the city. Japanese traditional performances such as Noh or Kyogen (traditional Japanese comedy) are still held today.
The shrine's annual festival is held in October, and here you can see Yabusame (horseback archery) and a children's Sumo tournament that uses a genuine sumo ring.
