Sounkyo Gorge
Sounkyo Gorge
Sounkyo Gorge spans from mid to north Hokkaido. It is a result of the Ishigari River slowly shaping Mount Daisetsu’s rocks over the years. The entire gorge measures 20 kilometers long, and throughout it there are many cliffs, rocks and waterfalls. Ginga Falls and Ryusei Falls are especially popular. The gorge is especially beautiful in the autumn seasons. The trees in the gorge change colors to signal fall. The area is beautiful year-round though, with fresh green leaves in the summer and a stunning snowy winter. In the winter, Sounkyo hosts the Ice Fall Festival, where you can see the waterfall freeze up completely. Near Sounkyo Gorge, you can find Sounkyo Onsen, a cozy hot springs town. There, you can find many accommodation site and restaurants.
