View of Kunneporu from the sea

Kunneporu is a cave in the ocean that can be found on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido. You can see the cave by going on the Shiretoko Sightseeing Ship from Utoro Port in the town of Shari. Kunneporu derives from the language of Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, and means means “black cave”. The cave has a diameter of about 20 meters, and is a pitch-black color. From the sightseeing ship, you can see the mysterious cave at a close distance. The view of the cave and the sea is especially nice from the observation deck on the ship. Right by Utoro Port, you can find Oronko Rock. The huge rock measures 60 meters tall, and you can climb it up. After going up the 170 steep steps, you will be presented with a stunning view of the Okhotsk Sea and the town of Utoro.
