Rausu
Rausu
The town of Rausu locates on the Shiretoko Peninsula on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido. Rausu makes up the eastern half of the peninsula, and to its west is the Shiretoko Mountain Range. The Shiretoko Peninsula is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its impressive marine and on-land ecosystems. Mount Rausu can be found on the central-western part of the town. The mountain is a popular mountain climbing spot. South of the mountain, you can find Lake Rausu. The lake sits in the middle of the wetlands, and the area is a great trekking spot. From town’s coast, you can board onto glacier-seeing ships to see the glaciers flowing south from the Okhotsk Sea. Throughout the year, several events are held in the town of Rausu. One is the Rausu Sangyo (Agriculture) Festival, held in late September. During this festival, you can witness salmon auctions, receive vouchers for free ikura rice bowls and more.
