Mount Meakan locates in eastern Hokkaido, and is a part of the Akan Mashu National Park. The mountain measures 1,499 meters tall, and is the tallest of the Akan Volcanic Complex. The mountain is an active volcano that was created over 20,000 years ago due to volcanic activity. The mountain’s peak, too, was created by a volcanic eruption that happened around 4,000 years ago. In the summer and fall months, Mount Meakan is a popular mountain climbing spot. You can climb up to the peak in about 4 to 6 hours, allowing visitors to trek on a day trip. There are accommodation sites near the mountain too, if you want to stay overnight.
