Todoroki Valley is designated as scenic spot by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Located in the Setagaya ward of Tokyo, Todoroki Valley is the only valley in all of the 23 wards. Despite it being in one of Japan (and Tokyo)’s most bustling areas, Todoroki Valley is a serene, relaxing nature getaway. Other than nature, there are also traditional Japanese gardens and historical sites on the premise.

Every April, cherry blossoms come to full bloom at Todoroki Valley. The view from Todoroki Fudoson Temple is especially stunning, and is a must-see when visiting Tokyo in the spring.

Summer

Summer at Todoroki Valley

To cool down and escape the unbearable Tokyo summer heat, visit Todoroki Valley. The surrounding trees create a natural breeze, and the valley is an oasis away from the busy streets.
Visit in July to see the Firefly Festival (ホタル祭り), where you can see the ethereal sight of fireflies illuminating the summer night. Todoroki Valley actually is one of the few places in Tokyo where you can see fireflies.

Todoroki Valley is an amazing fall foliage spot as well. From the end of November to the beginning of December, maples, gingkos and zelkovas change hues for breathtaking autumn scenery.

Towards the bottom of the stream is a study built in 1961, and a traditional Japanese garden surrounding it. The garden was built in 1973, and still keeps its original form today.

You can go inside the study. It has a traditional feel and is nice and relaxing.

Horizontal Stone Chamber - 横穴式石室

On the left side of the valley is a horizontal stone chamber, built between the 3rd and 8th century. This style of chamber had a hole on the side as a passage to bring in and store the remains. Over six chambers have been found at Todoroki Valley, and the third chamber was found in especially good shape.

Golf Bridge

At the entrance of Todoroki Valley is a big red bridge, called the Golf Bridge. There was once a golf course in the area, and the bridge would bring visitors to the golf course. The Golf Bridge today stands out in the surrounding nature.

Setsugetsuka: traditional Japanese teahouse

At Setsugetsuka, a traditional style teahouse, you can take a break and eat Japanese sweets. Nearby is Fudo Falls, so you can hear the relaxing sounds of the water while enjoying your snack. Kuzumochi (くず餅), a mochi-like snack topped with kinako powder, is the most popular snack at Setsugetsuka. Enjoy your kuzumochi and the view of your nature surroundings!

At the depths of Todoroki Valley is Todoroki Fudoson Temple, and in the premise you can find Todoroki Fudo Falls. The falls were once used for Buddhist priests’ training, and has a strong spiritual background.
