Sanada Hut
Sanada Hut
Sanadaan is located near Koyasan, in Ito District, the Northern part of Wakayama Prefecture. The temple stands in the remains of a mansion, where Sanada Masayuki and Yukimura (his son), who were warriors in the Sengoku period, lived a secluded life. The temple is also known as “Zenmeishoin.” All over the property, you can find inscriptions of “Rokumonsen,” which was the Sanada family’s crest. Sanadaan was founded in 1741. It is said that Taian Shonin built the temple by the orders of Sanada Hut's idol, Enmeikoyasu Jizo Bosatsu. The temple property also has Sanada Jinushi Daigongen, where Masayuki is enshrined as Daigongen, and Sanada Museum of Treasures, where items related to the Sanada Family and Taian Shonin are on display. About 170 meters east from the temple is an archeological site called Sanada Kohun (Kohuns is are megalithic tombs constructed in ancient Japan). Though the Kohun was constructed around the 6th century, it was named Sanada Kohun since it was found to have a loophole used by Yukimura during war. Every year, Sanadaan holds the Kishukudoyama Sanada Festival in early May to pay tribute to the father and the sun. People walk around Kudoyama Town in a daimyo (Japanese feudal lords that prospered in the medieval era) precession in attire of the Sengoku period.
