Yukura Shrine

Yukura Shrine

Yukura Shrine is located in Hakodate City, southern Hokkaido. It is said to enshrine the guardian deity of the nearby famous hot spring Yunokawa Onsen. The shrine is thought to have been built in gratitude around 1717 by a lumberjack who was completely healed of neuralgia by the hot spring water.

The highlight of this shrine is the stone rabbit statue, Nadeusagi (Stroking Rabbit), on the precincts. It is said that if you pray while stroking the rabbit, your wish will come true. In addition, there are unique items such as the Good Luck Gavel, which is said to fix your afflicted body parts with a touch of divine intervention. In particular, Hakodate Ikasu Omikuji (Cool Fortune), a local written fortune that is a specialty of Yukura Shrine is the most popular item among worshippers. The squid or octopus-shaped omikuji is fished up to tell your fortune. Its contents are written in Hokkaido dialect, which is another interesting aspect of this omikuji.

The shrine is located on a small hill, so you can overlook the Yunokawa Onsen area. I also recommend a leisurely stroll after your visit to the shrine.
