Ryuokyo Canyon
Ryuokyo Canyon
Ryuokyo Canyon locates near the upper stream of Kinugawa River in northern Tochigi prefecture. It is a part of the Nikko National Park, and connects Kawaji Onsen and Kinugawa Onsen. The canyon is said to be a result of the Kinugawa River’s waters eroding onto the surrounding rocks. The erosion began about 20 million years ago, and is now at it scurrent form. From its dragon-like force, it was named “Ryuokyo 龍王峡”, since “龍” means dragon. In the spring and summer, flowers like the Asian skunk-cabbage and the Arctic iris surround the canyon. The fall foliage is impressive too, and many visitors come from all over Japan to see it with their own eyes. From Kawaji Onsen to Ryuokyo Canyon is about a 7-kilometer hike. You can use the designated hiking trails to hike to and from the hot springs.
