Lake Toya

Lake Toya, located in the southern part of Hokkaido Prefecture, is a caldera lake that was created roughly 110,000 years ago from the eruption of Mt. Usu. Lake Toya and Mt. Usu have been designated as one of UNESCO’s World Geoparks for their important geological makeup. All around the lake, you can see the traces of Earth’s dynamic activities, including the lava dome in the middle of the lake, called Nakajima Island, the constantly smoking Mt. Usu located south of the lake and Showa Shinsan mountain, which was created by the eruption of Mt. Usu about 20 years ago. There are many hiking trails around the lake, so you can enjoy the natural beauty of the area at your own pace. You can also take a canoe or a kayak out on the lake and see some breathtaking views of the area. The clear water and the reflection of the blue sky will be sure to make you feel refreshed. The Lake Toya Hot Springs are located on the southern shore of the lake. Here, you will be able to feel the blessings of the nearby volcano through the hot springs, the wonderful view of the lake and the delicious food that is grown in the surrounding bountiful land.
