Otaru Station

Otaru Station

JR Hakodate line Otaru station is located in Otaru city, western Hokkaido. This station is familiar to many as the gateway for Otaru tourism. Built in 1931, the station building was the first reinforced concrete construction in Hokkaido, and is still in use even after 90 years. This building was designated a National Tangible Cultural Property in 2006.

A point of interest in the station is the platform 4, nicknamed the "Yujiro platform". This platform is nicknamed after the renowned Japanese actor Yujiro Ishihara, and is famous for being featured as a location in his television shooting. There is a life-sized panel of the actor standing on the platform, and a commemorative photograph with it might make for a good souvenir.
