Otaru Canal

The Otaru Canal is located in Otaru, Hokkaido. This canal is found near the coast of Otaru Port.
This canal was completed during the Taisho era, with brick warehouses being built alongside it up to the Showa era. Today, the canal and warehouses are no longer in service, but have become Otaru's leading tourist spot. Promenades are set up on both sides of the canal, allowing visitors to take a walk and experience the historic canal. Illuminations at night also bring about a different scenery from the daytime.
Every year in February, the "Otaru Snow Light Road", where the canal is lit up by candles, is held. These candles float on the surface of the water, and their warm and soft lights give the canal's old streets a fantastical ambience.
