Mount Io's sulfuric fumes and rocky surface

Mount Io locates in eastern Hokkaido in the town of Teshikaga. It is an active volcano, and was named “Io” (Japanese for sulfur) because of its constant sulfuric fumes. In the Ainu language (of the indigenous people of Hokkaido), the mountain was called “Atosanupuri”, meaning naked mountain, as the mountain was quite bald. Since the mountain is still very much active, it is closed to the general public. Rather than having activities on the mountain, there are activities around it, such as enjoying the azalea fields right at its foot.
