    Mount Io's sulfuric fumes and rocky surface

    Mount Io Mount Io locates in eastern Hokkaido in the town of Teshikaga. It is an active volcano, and was named “Io” (Japanese for sulfur) because of its constant sulfuric fumes. In the Ainu language (of the indigenous people of Hokkaido), the mountain was called “Atosanupuri”, meaning naked mountain, as the mountain was quite bald. Since the mountain is still very much active, it is closed to the general public. Rather than having activities on the mountain, there are activities around it, such as enjoying the azalea fields right at its foot.

    Sunayu Sunayu locates right by Lake Kussharo in eastern Hokkaido. It is a sandy area with a hot spring underneath. You can dig up the sand in the designated area and create your very own hot spring bath. There is a also a footbath area for those who want a quick moment of relaxation rather than a long bath. Between the warmer months (June to September), you can rent out a space on the camping grounds for a few hundred yen a day. You can swim in the lake, bathe in the Sunayu and head back to the campsite for a campfire.

    Kottaro Marsh Kottaro Marsh locates in eastern Hokkaido’s town of Shibecha. The whole wetland measures bigger than all of Tokyo. These wetlands are known as the nesting area for Japanese cranes. From the Kottaro Marsh Observatory, you might be able to see the cranes. The cranes come to the wetland in spring to nest. You can find other rare creatures such as the Iijima common hawker dragonfly. The marsh lies by the Kushiro River. During the summer, you can enjoy activities such as canoeing and rafting.

  • Mashu Onsen Mashu Onsen Hot Springs is the oldest hot spring in eastern Hokkaido, and is located in the town of Teshikaga. There were once two hot springs in Teshikaga – Teshikaga Onsen and Tobetsu Onsen. In 1981, the two combined to create Mashu Onsen. Throughout the onsen town, there are many accommodation sites ranging in size. At the nearby road station, Michi-no-eki Mashu, you can enjoy a footbath. Near Mashu Onsen, there is a national park where you can enjoy Hokkaido’s vast nature. The various sites in the area allow you to enjoy nature and have a fun day out.

    Kyumarumaru Sogen Kyumarumaru Sogen locates in the town of Teshikaga in eastern Hokkaido. The plains measure about 10㎢, and are a part of the town’s property. From the Kyumarumaru Sogen observatory, you can see the whole grassy field. On the field, there are about 1,300 cows roaming around. On clear days, you can see as far as Mount Io. On the premise, there is a golf course with 4 courses. There are also barbecue areas and restaurants, too.
