Cape Erimo and the ocean

Cape Erimo

Cape Erimo locates on the southern coast of Hokkaido. It is on the southernmost tip of the Hidaka Mountains that stretch from northern to southern Hokkaido. Even in the sea, the Hidaka Mountain range continues for 6 kilometers underwater. In 2010, the cape was designated as a Pirika-noka national scenic spot. The “Pirinka-noka”, meaning “beautiful shape” in the Ainu (indigenous people of Hokkaido) language, is designated to spots in Hokkaido that have a special connection with the Ainu culture. Cape Erimo is a popular sunrise-watching spot. It is well visited on New Years Day, as it is a Japanese tradition to see the first sunrise of the year. Though typically closed during the winter months, Kaze-no-Yakata, a facility on the cape, is open just on New Years Day. You can see the sunrise from the observatory in Kaze-no-Yakata. In August, the Todai (lighthouse) Festival is held. The three-day festival celebrates traditional arts, and has events such as a fireworks display.
