Suirennuma Pond

Suirennuma Pond and Mount Hakkoda

Suirennuma Pond

Suirennuma Pond situates in southern Aomori prefecture in the Hakkoda Mountains. The pond lies on a wetland that is over 1,000 meters above ground level. It is famous for its water lilies that bloom in the summer, which explains the meaning behind the name “suiren-numa”, meaning “water lily pond”. Aside from water lilies, you can find a number of plants around Suirennuma, such as skunk cabbages in early spring and the colored leaves during the fall season. Visitors can explore the pond area by walking around on the viewing deck or the walking paths. These areas are closed in the winter due to heavy snowfall. Nearby, visitors can find Sukayu Onsen hot springs. The famous sennin-buro bath, meaning “thousand-people bath”, can be found there.
