Oirase Gorge Oirase Gorge’s waters are amazingly transparent and mesmerizing, and it has been designated as a national natural monument. The 14-kilometer gorge is surrounded by rich nature, and is a beauty year-round. Hike by the gorge and find many waterfalls and rapids waiting. The gorge begins at the very base of Mount Hakkoda and continues into Lake Towada in southern Aomori.

Tsuta Numa Lake Tsuta Numa Lake is one of the Seven Tsuta Lakes in Aomori prefecture. The lake locates at the foot of Mount Hakkoda, and is well known for its waters’ incredible clarity. The clear waters serve as a reflective mirror during the fall foliage season, when the surrounding beech trees change into stunning shades of reds and oranges. Around the Seven Tsuta Lakes is a 2.8-kilometer long path that is perfect for a walk. Take your time around the lakes and observe all of the nature and wildlife around you. After your walk, you can visit Tsuta Onsen hot springs and unwind.

Tsuta Onsen Tsuta Onsen locates in Towada city in southern Aomori. The hot spring has been loved by famous Japanese writers throughout history as a place of relaxation and rejuvenation. With water flowing from Oirase Gorge and the Hakkoda Mountains surrounding the area, Tsuta Onsen is rich in nature. There is one accommodation at Tsuta Onsen, called Tsuta Onsen Ryokan. There, you can bathe in Tsuta Onsen’s fresh, hot waters and enjoy meals made from local ingredients. A museum dedicated to writer Omachi Keitgetsu, known for making Lake Towada and Oirase Gorge known throughout Japan, can be found in the Tsuta Onsen area. At Oirase Gorge and Lake Towada, visitors can join in on guided tours. In the winter, the “Lake Towada Winter’s Story” illumination art event is very popular.

Towada Shrine Towada Shrine, located by Lake Towada in southern Aomori prefecture, is a holy site sitting in a cedar forest. It was founded in 807, and enshrines Yamatotakeru-no-mikoto. There is a legend that at Towada Shrine, a monk transformed into a nine-headed dragon, and slayed the python that was controlling Lake Toawada. Because of this legend, Towada Shrne is known as a shrine of good luck. The Uranaiba, or fortune telling spot, is a popular site at Towada Shrine. Purchase a special slip of paper called oyori-gami at the shrine, and throw it into the lake. It is said that if the paper sinks into the lake, your wishes will be granted. The Uranaiba is currently closed, so visitors can instead perform the fortune telling ritual from a different nearby site.

Kanchogai-dori (Komakaido) Kanchogai-dori, also known as Komakaido, is a street that runs through Towada city in Aomori prefecture. Since Towada is famous for horse breeding, there is a large bronze statue of a horse on the street. In the spring, 156 cherry blossom trees bloom on the sides of the road. The cherry blossoms and the several statues and sculptures on the side of the road create an artistic, lovely view. You can get a great view of the cherry blossoms from the observatory floor at the city hall. During the Towada Spring Festival, held between mid-April and early May, shops and food stands pop up on Kanchogai-dori. There is even a horseback riding experience booth during the festival.

Suirennuma Pond Suirennuma Pond situates in southern Aomori prefecture in the Hakkoda Mountains. The pond lies on a wetland that is over 1,000 meters above ground level. It is famous for its water lilies that bloom in the summer, which explains the meaning behind the name “suiren-numa”, meaning “water lily pond”. Aside from water lilies, you can find a number of plants around Suirennuma, such as skunk cabbages in early spring and the colored leaves during the fall season. Visitors can explore the pond area by walking around on the viewing deck or the walking paths. These areas are closed in the winter due to heavy snowfall. Nearby, visitors can find Sukayu Onsen hot springs. The famous sennin-buro bath, meaning “thousand-people bath”, can be found there.

Lake Towada Lake Towada spreads across Aomori and Akita prefectures, and is a part of the Towada Hachimantai National Park. There are several sightseeing spots at Lake Towada. One is Ebisu-Daikoku Island, an island made of molten lava that lies on the lake. Another is Towada Shrine, which is known to be a spiritual power spot. There is a guided tour of the shrine, where a local guide explains to you the history and legends behind Towada Shrine. In the winter months, the Lake Towada’s Winter Story event is held. During the event, snow sculptures are displayed and some areas around the lake are lit up. There is even a fireworks display, too.
