The Japanese Sward Museum
The Japanese Sward Museum
Touken Museum, or the Japanese Sward Museum, is located in a corner of Former Yasuda Garden in Sumida-ku in the Eastern Tokyo. The museum stores and exhibits swords, armors, metal working records, and others.
Launched in 1968 in order to spread Japanese sword culture, the museum exhibits 33 swords, eight sword accoutrements, and 25 parts of sword accouterments, many of which are from the Heian and Kamakura Periods. With some the items designated as national treasures, the museum is irresistible to Japanese sword fans.
It is a three-story building designed round-shaped with the roof placed low above the ground, allowing the museum to be in harmony with the scenery of the garden. The first floor features museum shops and exhibition and information corners, the second floor a reading room, and the third floor a rooftop garden as well as an exhibition room.
Former Yasuda Garden, which accommodates the museum, used to be a strolling pond garden irrigated with water from Sumida River. Today ebb and flow of the tide is replicated with artificial pumps. Experiencing Japanese sword culture and strolling in the garden enables you to enjoy immersing yourself in “wa” or peaceful harmony.
