Limited Express Ibusuki no Tamatebako
Limited Express Ibusuki no Tamatebako
Limited Express “Ibusuki no Tamatebako” is a train service between Kagoshima Chuo (central) Station and Ibusuki Station. The special train is fondly known as “Ibutama” and its design is based on a local folktale of a dragon’s palace in the Satsuma Peninsula. The train ride is enjoyable both inside and out. The exterior is a bold monotone color, while the interior has a charming retro vibe. The train welcomes passengers by venting out steam from above the doors.
The train travels along the southern coast, offering spectacular views of the sea and Kagoshima’s iconic Sakura-jima island. Apart from the scenery, many passengers enjoy the food items sold onboard. One of the popular items is the two-tone Ibutama pudding. The double-layered custard pudding is similar to crème-brulee, with black sesame on the bottom. Lunch boxes featuring local ingredients and locally produced drinks are also available. The final stop of Ibusuki is home to many hot springs. For a quintessential Kagoshima experience, try steamed sand bathing on the beach. Or soak your tired feet in the foot bath in front of Ibusuki station.
