Shiba Daijingu Shrine

Shiba Daijingu Shrine stands quietly between offices in Minato ward of Tokyo. This shrine has been worshipped as, the Ise Jingu Shrine of the Kanto Area" for over 1,000 years because of enshrined deities: Amaterasu Omikami and Toyouke no Okami. The long history of the shrine can be observed in the Nishiki-e(color print) made by popular artists from the Edo era, such as Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai. Shiba Daijingu Shrine is known for enshrining the God of match-making. In addition, Japanese nobles, such as Minamoto-no-Yoritomo, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Sugawara Michizane are also enshrined, so this shrine is also famous for the God of good luck, economic fortune, success in business, recovery from eye diseases and more. Shiba Daijingu Shrine has also become popular for "The fight of Megumi", a Kabuki program,Megumi is a name of the fire brigade from the Edo era. In the precinct, there is a pair of guardian dogs with huge "Megumi" engravings. There is an annual festival which takes place from September 11 to September 21. This 11-day event is commonly known by "Daradara-sai", or Lazy Festival. It is also called "Shoga-matsuri", or Ginger Festival, because of the historical origin of the ginger fields. Worshippers offered ginger to the gods as ginger was considered auspicious against negative vibes. Due to this history, visitors can purchase ginger at the festival.
