Fukagawa-juku main store / Tomioka Hachiman store
Fukagawa-juku is located in a historic district of Tokyo. Fukagawa-juku’s main restaurant is across the street from a folklore museum showcasing the neighborhood’s traditional way of life.
The Tomioka Hachiman outlet is located inside the grounds of the centuries-old Tomioka Hachiman-gu shrine, near Monzen-nakacho station.
Fukagawa meshi, or Fukagawa rice, is an authentic Tokyo meal of rice with clams. There are two ways to enjoy the clams – either topping them over a bowl of rice in bukkake (pour over) style, or cooking the clams together with rice and soy sauce (takikomi). Fukagawa-juku serves both recipes.
The clam toppings are cooked in a miso (soybean paste) based broth that is made from a secret recipe of the restaurant. The soup is full of flavor of freshly harvested clams, without any fishy smell. The pilaf-like rice mixed with clams (hamamatsu-fu) has a mild taste with a hint of soy sauce. The dried seaweed topping pairs well with the clams that smell like an ocean breeze. For those who want to try both meals, order the combo set named Tatsumi gonomi.
