Yamashiro Onsen Hot Springs

Yamashiro Onsen Hot Springs

Area

Yamashiro-Onsen is a hot spring resort located in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Its origins are said to lie in the high priest Gyoki's discovery here in 725CE, of a bird treating its wounded wing in a puddle.

Yamashiro-onsen has 3 hot springs. These are 1) A sulfate / chloride spring, effective for healing cuts, 2) an alkaline simple spring, effective for soothing skin and 3) a sulfate spring, effective for improving circulation. It is so effective that one of the oldest records shows that the renown military commander of the feudal era, Mitsuhide Akechi, stayed there to heal his wounds for 10 days in 1565.

To fully enjoy this hot spring resort, a visit to the "souyu" public bath and the "Ko-souyu" experience-based hot spring museum are the way to go. Ko-souyu is a reproduced public bath in the Meiji Era. The Souyu allows you to enjoy the natural hot spring without dilution, and the Ko-souyu public bath maintains the old-fashioned style of having no showers, and only a bathtub. Experiencing both of these styles of hot springs, both with different characteristics from their respective times, is sure to give you a better understanding of Yamashiro Onsen Hot Spring's long history.
