Steps of Success at Atago Jinja Shrine

Atago Jinja Shrine

Located in the heart of Tokyo’s business district, Atago-jinja is a shrine built in 1603 during the Edo period. Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered this shrine to be built to protect his capital of Edo from fire and disaster. The steep flight of stairs located right at the entrance of the shrine is famous for the legend of Shusse no Ishidan, literally translating to “Steps of Success”, in which a young samurai climbed up and down the stairs on horseback. Visiting Atago-jinja is especially convenient if you visited Tokyo Tower via Kamiyacho station, as this shrine is a five minute walk from there.
