Shimofuro Onsen

Shimofuro Onsen
Shimofuro Onsen, in the northern part of Aomori prefecture, is a hot springs town. These baths have been loved for hundreds of years for its healing properties. Shimofuro Onsen has a sulfur spring, and its baths are good for those with high blood pressure. Many unique events are held throughout the year around Shimofuro Onsen. In August, the Ryujin Festival is held to pray for a big catch in fishing. Other festivals include the Oishi-jinja Festival, Inari-jinja Festival and more. One popular tourist destination in the town is Strait Isaribi Park. The park is unique in that it has a mini man-made ocean. At the park is an observatory with a great view of Hokkaido, and a memorial of Niijima Jo, the author of “Kaikyo” (a short story based in Shimofuro Onsen).
