Tonosawa Onsen
Tonosawa Onsen
Tonosawa Onsen is located in Hakone town in the southwest region of Kanagawa prefecture. The hot spring is one of the 17 hot springs of Hakone, and it is a quiet area with old inns, or ryokans, dotted here and there. Tonosawa onsen opened in 1605. The plentiful spring water is a simple alkaline type and is said to be good for the skin. The hot spring was popular amongst famous Meiji era authors like Natsume Soseki. Out of the many ryokans in this area, Fukuzumiro and Kansuiro should receive extra attention. Fukuzumiro has the Kyoto-style sukiya architecture and Kansuiro has a multi-storied wooden structure. Both are stylish, well-established ryokans registered as Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan. Nearby spots are the Zeniarai Benten Shrine right by Tonosawa Station and the Hakone Tozan Line Hayakawa Bridge (aka Deyama Railway Bridge) that goes over the Hayakawa ravine.
