Ubako Onsen
Ubako Onsen
Ubako Onsen can be found in Hakone, a town in the western region of Kanagawa prefecture. The onsen is located at the highest peak of the volcanic cone in the Hakone caldera. Ubako Onsen has one of the longest histories of the 17 hot springs of Hakone. The quiet, forested surroundings have a holy-like atmosphere. The spring water types here include calcium sulphate and sodium sulphate. The onsen makes an appearance in a famous Japanese folk tale when Sataka Kintoki, also known as Kintaro, comes to heal his injured eye at the hot spring. Even now, the story is still told with many coming to the hot spring to help heal eye disease. Another historical aspect of the Ubako Onsen is the mountain religion. The sacred site of the mountain worshipping religion remains here. People would pray for good health and effective healing at the Yakushi hall and Jizo hall.
