The Ajigaike Benzai Tensha Shrine in Ashinoyu

Ashinoyu Onsen can be found in Hakone, a town in the western region of Kanagawa prefecture. It is located 870 meters above sea level at the base of Mt. Komagatake. Ashinoyu Onsen has prospered as a hot spring area since the Kamakura period. It is said that many pilgrims of the mountain worshipping religion stopped for a visit. It was counted as one of the seven hot springs of Hakone in the Edo period and since then, has been a favorite of writers. The many visitors would create ukiyo-paintings and literary works here. Today, it is one of the 17 hot springs of Japan. The simple sulfur spring water is a rare one with low levels of alkaline.It is good for the skin. Nearby are historic, cultural spots like the Shojigaike lake, a group of stone Buddha sculptures, and stone pagoda monuments. Come and enjoy the lovely atmosphere of the Ashinoyu onsen that has even been depicted in ukiyo-e paintings.
