Hakone Checkpoint

The Hakone Checkpoint stands near Ashinoko Lake in the southern west part of Kanagawa Prefecture. This checkpoint was built by the shogunate government to look over the Tokai road, the road that connected Edo and Kyoto. At the checkpoint, visitors and packages were examined to confirm its safety. Today, this gate is restored as a historical research site. The areas, such as Kamiban rest area and the guard station, which were actually used in the past, have been reconstructed for visitors to see. Walking into these areas will make you feel as though you were back in the Edo Period. At the Hakone Checkpoint Data Library, you can see many of the documents, furniture and miniature replicas of the daily scenes at the checkpoint.
