Category： Nature / sceneryArea： NiigataLake Hyoko Lake Hyoko locates in northeastern Niigata’s city of Agano. The lake was made during the Edo Period (1603 – 1867) as a reservoir. Today, the lake is famous for its swans. Every year, swans flock to the lake in early October, and leave around late March. In November, the lake reaches the swan’s peak season, and over 5,000 swans swarm to Lake Hyoko. This sight has been designated as a national natural monument. During swan season, you can buy snacks for the swans and feed them. Going in the early morning or evening is recommended, since the sunrise and sunset at Lake Hyoko are breathtaking. In the spring, 200 cherry blossom trees garnish the Lake Hyoko Area. Visit again in early summer to see over 500,000 flowers, such as irises, blossom around the lake. Before or after going to the lake, you can visit Hakucho no Sato, a museum focusing on swans and their history at Lake Hyoko.
