Time Bell Tower & Kashiya Street The Time Bell Tower is in Kawagoe City, central Saitama Prefecture. It is a famous symbol of Kawagoe City and a popular touring spot. The Time Bell is a bell striking hall which rings the time for people living in Kawagoe. It is said that it was built about 400 years ago, and has been rebuilt every time it has burned down and operates even today. The Time Bell is rung 4 times each day at 6:00,12:00, 15:00 and 18:00. The sound of the bells echoing in the city of Koedo Kawagoe makes you feel the town's history. Kashiya (sweet shop) Street is an area where about 20 candy stores are concentrated. The street developed its concentration of confectioners in the early Meiji period, and has continued to make sweets through the ages, in the stead of Tokyo that was greatly damaged by the Great Kanto Earthquake. The items for sale are all candies and cheap sweets that give a nostalgic feeling. Combined with the view of the town scape, it might make you feel a little bit sentimental. Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is the shrine famous for its spiritual power in matchmaking, located in Kagagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. It is said to be founded about 1500 years ago in the Kofun Era. Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine enshrines 5 grand deities. They are Ashinazuchino-mikoto, Tenazuchino-mikoto, their daughter deity of Kushiinadahimeno-mikoto, her husband deity of Susanoono-mikoto, and the final deity said to be the daughter (or descendant) of the previous two, Oonamuchino-mikoto. Because these 5 deities are family, Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is said to bring happiness to the family and marriage, as well as good luck in matchmaking. Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is also known for holding an event, called Enmusubi Furin (Matchmaking Wind chime) every summer. 2,000 wind chimes are hung throughout the shrine, and legend says that their resonance in the wind will carry the worshippers' wishes to the god of matchmaking. Many people visit the shrine every year, looking forward to the photogenic sight of colorful wind chimes swinging in the air.

Kita-in Kita-in is located in Kawagoe City in the southwestern part of Saitama Prefecture. Kita-in Temple was founded in 830 by the Buddhist priest, Enjin (also known as Jikaku Daishi). The Tokugawa family has deep connections to this place, and It has been revered as an important historical site. The mountain gates, bell tower gates, and shrines are designated as Important Cultural Properties, and the precincts are famous for their numerous preserved cultural properties. Among them, the “Gohyakukan” that expresses human emotions is one of the highlights. This masterpiece consists of 540 stone Buddhas lining the grounds. Events such as Daruma City, February Setsubun, and the Spring Cherry Blossom Festival are held in the New Year Season.
